Lie detector machine

MODEL RELEASED. Lie detector machine. Polygraph examiner with an analogue lie detector, or polygraph, machine. The machine records changes in a number of physiological processes, as the examiner asks a subject a series of questions. The processes measured include blood pressure, respiration rate and heart rate. The results are shown as traces drawn on moving paper. The examiner interprets the results to determine if the subject demonstrated deceptive behaviour. The reliability of polygraphs is controversial and their evidence is not admissible in court

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a polygraph examiner in action, using an analogue lie detector machine to uncover the truth. The machine, with its intricate system of wires and dials, meticulously records changes in various physiological processes as the examiner poses a series of questions to the subject. Blood pressure, respiration rate, and heart rate are among the vital signs monitored by this cutting-edge equipment. As traces appear on moving paper, these visual representations hold the key to determining whether deceptive behavior is at play. However, it is important to note that the reliability of polygraphs remains controversial and their evidence is not admissible in court. The skilled examiner's role becomes crucial as they interpret these results with precision and expertise. With their deep understanding of psychology and physiology, they strive to discern any signs of deception exhibited by the subject. In this thought-provoking image set against a backdrop reminiscent of an interrogation room from the 1950s, we witness both science and human behavior intersecting. The Caucasian male subject sits pensively while undergoing examination - his fate hanging on every trace drawn by this remarkable machine. While polygraphs continue to be widely used for detection purposes in fields such as medicine and crime investigation, their effectiveness remains unproven. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of our ongoing quest for truth through advancements in psychophysiological detection techniques.
