Malaria infection cycle, artwork
Malaria infection cycle, artwork. Life cycle of the Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria, which can cause coma and death. At upper left, a female Anopheles mosquito bites and infects a person. Sporozoites (green) in the mosquitos saliva enter the bloodstream and migrate (first arrow) to the liver (brown), where they infect the cells and multiply into merozoites (yellow), which rupture liver cells and enter the bloodstream. The merozoites then infect and damage red blood cells (red). Sexual forms (gametocytes, pink) are also produced, which when taken up by another mosquito (centre right, second arrow), infect the insect to continue the parasite life cycle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork depicts the intricate and deadly cycle of a malaria infection. The image showcases the life cycle of the Plasmodium parasite, which is responsible for causing this debilitating disease that can lead to coma and even death. In the upper left corner, we witness a female Anopheles mosquito biting and infecting a person. Within its saliva, green sporozoites are released into the bloodstream. These tiny organisms migrate towards the liver (depicted in brown) through an arrow, where they multiply rapidly into yellow merozoites. The merozoites then rupture liver cells and enter back into the bloodstream. Once in circulation, these cunning parasites target red blood cells (shown in red), infecting them and causing significant damage. Additionally, pink gametocytes or sexual forms are produced during this process. When another mosquito takes up these gametocytes (indicated by a second arrow on the center right), it becomes infected as well, continuing the vicious cycle of this parasitic life form. The artwork beautifully captures various elements such as sequence, host interaction, nature's complexity, disease transmission dynamics with arrows guiding our understanding throughout internal organs like liver cells and red blood cells involved in transmitting malaria within human bodies. This illustration serves as an invaluable tool for medical professionals studying malaria's biology while also raising awareness about this devastating condition that affects millions of people worldwide each year.
