Thomas Cavendish, English explorer

Thomas Cavendish (1555-1592), English explorer. Cavendish was born near Ipswich, Suffolk. At the age of 12 he inherited a fortune from his father. He attended Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, but left at age 17 without graduating. He was the first person to deliberately set out to circumnavigate the world and was the third person to do so (after Ferdinand Magellan and Francis Drake). He left England in July 1586, sailing first to Brazil. His route then took him south along the coast of Patagonia, through the Strait of Magellan (named after Ferdinand Magellan), across the Pacific to the Philippines, and round the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He reached Plymouth two years and 50 days after his departure, fabulously wealthy. He died during an

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Thomas Cavendish, an intrepid English explorer of the 16th century. Born in Suffolk in 1555, Cavendish inherited a substantial fortune at just twelve years old. Although he left Corpus Christi College without graduating at seventeen, his thirst for adventure led him to become the first person to deliberately embark on a circumnavigation of the world. Setting sail from England in July 1586, Cavendish's epic journey took him through Brazil and along the treacherous Patagonian coast. Navigating through the legendary Strait of Magellan named after Ferdinand Magellan himself, he continued across the vast Pacific Ocean towards the Philippines before rounding South Africa's Cape of Good Hope. After an arduous two-year and fifty-day voyage, Cavendish triumphantly returned to Plymouth as one of only three individuals known to have completed such a feat - following in the footsteps of Magellan and Francis Drake. His return brought immeasurable wealth that solidified his place among history's greatest adventurers. This stunning engraving captures Cavendish's essence as an Elizabethan hero navigating uncharted territories with unwavering determination. Created by Todd-White Art Photography exclusively for Science Photo Library, this monochrome masterpiece pays homage to a true pioneer whose exploits continue to inspire generations fascinated by exploration and discovery.
