EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Sncan Nord 1500 Griffon I/1 takes center stage. Manufactured by Société nationale de constructions aéronautiques du Nord (SNCAN) in 1956, this impressive aircraft is seen with its afterburner engaged, yet devoid of ramjets. The Griffon I/1 was a twin-engine, supersonic interceptor designed for the French Air Force, featuring a tapered rear fuselage and supplementary fins for enhanced stability. The image captures the moment of takeoff or high-speed flight, as evidenced by the intense exhaust plume emanating from the engine nozzles. The afterburner, a type of jet engine augmenter, is responsible for this powerful burst of flames. It increases the engine's thrust by injecting additional fuel into the exhaust gases, resulting in a significant increase in engine output and, consequently, higher speeds. Despite the absence of ramjets, the Sncan Nord 1500 Griffon I/1 was a formidable aircraft in its class. It boasted a maximum speed of Mach 1.1 (approximately 850 mph or 1,370 km/h) and a service ceiling of 55,000 feet (16,764 meters). Its advanced design and capabilities made it a valuable asset to the French Air Force during the Cold War era. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the technological advancements and innovation that defined the mid-20th century in aeronautical engineering. The Sncan Nord 1500 Griffon I/1 stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of speed and performance in aviation history.
