Valdecoxib anti-inflammatory drug
Valdecoxib, computer model. This drug was used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and menstrual symptoms under the trade name Bextra. It was withdrawn in 2005 following concerns about the drug increasing risk of heart attack and stroke. Valdecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug (NSAID), belonging to the family of Cox-2 inhibitors. NSAIDs inhibit the production of prostaglandins, the hormone-like chemicals that induce inflammation. The atoms in this model are represented by coloured spheres; carbon is green, hydrogen is white, oxygen is red, nitrogen is blue, and sulphur is yellow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer-generated model of Valdecoxib, an anti-inflammatory drug that was once widely used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and menstrual symptoms. However, its journey came to an abrupt halt in 2005 due to concerns surrounding its potential to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Valdecoxib belongs to the family of Cox-2 inhibitors, which are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These powerful substances work by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins – hormone-like chemicals responsible for inducing inflammation. In this visually striking illustration, each atom is represented by vibrant colored spheres: green for carbon, white for hydrogen, red for oxygen, blue for nitrogen, and yellow for sulfur. The intricate molecular structure depicted here offers a glimpse into the complex world of biochemistry and pharmacology. While Valdecoxib's use has been banned since its withdrawal from the market over safety concerns more than a decade ago, this image serves as a reminder of its past significance in clinical medicine. It also highlights how scientific advancements continue to shape our understanding of pharmaceutical compounds and their effects on biological systems.
