Dr. Wilson, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Dr. Wilson, c1911, (1913). Doctor, painter and naturalist Edward Wilson (1872-1912) died with Scott on the way back from the Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Dr. Edward Wilson, a man whose life was dedicated to both science and art. Taken in 1911 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image immortalizes the doctor's spirit and passion for exploration. Dr. Wilson, an accomplished painter and naturalist, joined Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica. This ambitious journey aimed to further scientific research while also claiming the South Pole for Britain. However, their dreams were shattered when they arrived at their destination on January 17th, 1912, only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there. Despite this disappointment, Dr. Wilson's unwavering determination remained evident until the end. Alongside Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Petty Officer Edgar Evans, and Scott himself; he faced treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies as they made their way back from the Pole. Tragically, all members of the expedition perished in late March due to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle. This print serves as a poignant reminder of Dr. Wilson's indomitable spirit and his invaluable contributions to both scientific exploration and artistic expression during one of history's most daring expeditions into uncharted territory - a testament to human resilience in the face of adversity.
