Estonians, 1862. Creator: Avgust Ivanovich Pettsol'd

Estonians, 1862. Sheet 33 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Estonians," is a stunning representation of a traditional Estonian community captured by the skilled lens of Avgust Ivanovich Pettsol'd in 1862. The image is taken from Sheet 33 of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia," a groundbreaking two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire. The album, dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, was the brainchild of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. Volume 1 of the work consists of 62 colored illustrations, including this one, depicting various ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional attire. The volume also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of each group's population in the empire's cities and a colored-coded ethnographic map. The Estonian image showcases the unique and intricate clothing and accessories that were an essential part of the Estonian culture at the time. The men are dressed in long, flowing shirts, often adorned with intricate patterns and embroidery, while the women wear long, pleated skirts and colorful aprons. The men's hats, known as "kokkas," are typically made of wool and feature a distinctive pom-pom on the top. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Estonian people and the meticulous work of Avgust Ivanovich Pettsol'd and Gustav-Fedor Pauli in documenting the diverse ethnic groups of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century.
