EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a detailed section of a map from 1915, showcasing the rocky maze along the route from Karaman to Kiz Kale in Turkey. The map was part of British writer, soldier, and diplomatic advisor Mark Sykes' journey through various regions including Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Persia, and Turkey during the early 20th century. At that time, Turkey was still under Ottoman Empire rule. The map highlights significant features such as ancient gates, ruins of historical importance, gravesites, and Teucers Tower. Lt. -Col. Sir Mark Sykes (1879-1919) meticulously documented his travels and experiences in his book "The Caliphs Last Heritage" which provides readers with a short history of the Turkish Empire. Sykes' remarkable career included serving as an honorary attache to the British Embassy in Constantinople and working in the Intelligence department of the War Office during World War I. Tragically, he succumbed to Spanish flu at just 39 years old. Published by Macmillan & Co. , London in 1915 as part of Sykes' extensive work on Turkish history and geography; this print is a testament to both his adventurous spirit and dedication to understanding different cultures within the Middle East region. Stanford's Geographical Establishment played a crucial role in preserving this valuable piece of history for future generations to appreciate.
