Coloured SEM of red blood cells on vessel wall

Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human red blood cells (erythrocytes) on the wall of a blood vessel. Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body. They are biconcave as this shape gives them a large surface area for gaseous exchange. Their nuclei and other organelles are lost as the cell matures, and they are packed with haemoglobin. This is a red iron-containing pigment which carries oxygen from the lungs and releases it in areas low in oxygen. It then picks up the carbon dioxide produced and carries it back to the lungs where it can be exchanged for oxygen again. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of red blood cells as they navigate through a blood vessel. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) captures the essence of these vital components of our circulatory system. Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, play a crucial role in transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout our bodies. The biconcave shape of these remarkable cells provides them with an expansive surface area for efficient gaseous exchange. As they mature, red blood cells lose their nuclei and other organelles to make room for an abundance of haemoglobin. This iron-containing pigment acts as a carrier, collecting oxygen from the lungs and delivering it to tissues deprived of this life-sustaining gas. In return, red blood cells collect carbon dioxide waste produced by our body's metabolic processes and transport it back to the lungs where it can be exchanged for fresh oxygen once again. This perpetual cycle ensures that every cell receives the necessary oxygenation while efficiently removing harmful waste products. Magnified at an unknown scale, this mesmerizing image invites us into the microscopic world within us – reminding us of the incredible complexity hidden beneath our skin. It serves as a testament to both nature's ingenuity and mankind's relentless pursuit to unravel its mysteries.
