Debenham, Gran, and Taylor in their Cubicle, 18 May 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Debenham, Gran, and Taylor in their Cubicle, 18 May 1911, (1913). Geologists Frank Debenham (1883-1965) and T Griffith Taylor (1880-1963), and ski expert Tryggve Gran (1888-1980). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the camaraderie and determination of three remarkable individuals amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Geologists Frank Debenham and T Griffith Taylor, along with ski expert Tryggve Gran, are seen here in their cubicle on 18 May 1911 during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Known as the Terra Nova Expedition, this ambitious journey aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott, a team of diverse experts including a surgeon, engineer, photographer, meteorologist, and physicist embarked on this historic mission. The photograph showcases Debenham, Gran, and Taylor huddled together in their modest living quarters. Their faces reveal both excitement and trepidation as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. The image serves as a testament to their unwavering spirit and dedication towards advancing human knowledge despite the unforgiving conditions surrounding them. Tragically, Scott's team arrived at the South Pole on 17 January 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining companions succumbed to exhaustion near the end of March. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this evocative photograph stands as an enduring tribute to these brave explorers who ventured into uncharted territories in pursuit of scientific discovery against all odds.
