Housing project, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1962. Artist: Michael Walters
Housing project, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1962. This housing development in Kirby Street in the South Yorkshire town of Mexborough is a good example of the failed 1960s housing ethos. The ugly concrete fac ades soon looked dated and shabby. By the 1990s few people wanted to live in these council owned boxes and family tenants were gradually moved out to be replaced by the more troublesome tenants on the council register. The flats became a centre for drug dealing and were gradually vacated and boarded up before being demolished in 2008. The neatly maintained Victorian terraced houses which surrounded the property are still standing and remain an enduring feature of the former mining town

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Kirby Street housing project in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, taken by artist Michael Walters in 1962. This image serves as a stark reminder of the failed housing ethos of the 1960s. The concrete facades that once seemed modern and promising quickly became outdated and dilapidated, reflecting a depressing reality. By the 1990s, these council-owned boxes lost their appeal, leading to a gradual exodus of family tenants who were replaced by more troublesome individuals on the council register. As a result, drug dealing became rampant within these flats, ultimately leading to their abandonment and subsequent demolition in 2008. In contrast to this gloomy scene stands the enduring Victorian terraced houses that surround this ill-fated development. These well-maintained structures serve as a testament to Mexborough's history as a former mining town. The photograph encapsulates an era marked by misguided architectural choices and social challenges. It invites us to reflect on how urban planning decisions can have long-lasting consequences for communities. Despite its grim subject matter, this image provides valuable insight into Britain's post-war housing landscape during the mid-20th century.
