LM of a cross section through alveoli in the lung
Lung alveoli. Light micrograph of a cross section through lung tissue showing alveoli. Making up the frame (spongy appearance) are tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveolar walls (pink) are lined with a one-cell thick layer of epithelium. Breathed in air diffuses through the epithelium to a rich network of capillaries in the walls. This is where exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) takes place. Oxygen will be carried by the capillary blood to the heart. At the same time carbon dioxide will diffuse out of the blood into the lung and will be breathed out. Magnification: x64 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a cross section through the alveoli in the lung, providing us with a glimpse into the intricate workings of our respiratory system. The frame is composed of numerous tiny air sacs known as alveoli, giving it a spongy appearance. Highlighted in pink, the delicate walls of these alveoli are lined with an incredibly thin layer of epithelium consisting of just one cell. It is through this remarkable barrier that breathed-in air diffuses, making its way to an extensive network of capillaries embedded within the walls. These capillaries play a crucial role in facilitating gas exchange between our lungs and bloodstream. As oxygen passes through the epithelium and enters these capillaries, it embarks on a journey towards our heart where it will be transported throughout our body. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide effortlessly diffuses out of the blood into the lung and eventually leaves our bodies when we exhale. With a magnification level of x64 at 35mm size, this image offers us an up-close view into this vital process occurring within each breath we take. By shedding light on such intricate anatomical details, this photograph serves as a reminder of both the complexity and elegance present within our own bodies.
