EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Georg Klinger for Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases two intriguing moths: the Small Lappet, Phyllodesma ilicifolia, and the Autumn Silkworm Moth, Lemonia taraxaci. The Small Lappet, also known as the Small Gold-laced Moth or the Small Hepialid, is depicted on the left side of the image. With its wingspans reaching up to 6 centimeters, this moth is characterized by its distinctive lappets, or triangular projections, on the edges of its hindwings. The lappets are adorned with intricate gold patterns, giving the moth a striking appearance. The Small Lappet is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, and its larvae feed on various plant species, particularly oak and holly. On the right side of the engraving, the Autumn Silkworm Moth, also known as the Swift or the Ghost Moth, is depicted. With a wingspan of up to 5 centimeters, this moth is recognized by its pale, almost transparent wings, which are speckled with dark spots. The Autumn Silkworm Moth is native to Europe and Asia, and its larvae feed on various grasses, including heather and clover. The metamorphosis of these moths from caterpillars to adults is a fascinating process, marked by the shedding of their old exoskeletons and the emergence of new, winged forms. The intricate details captured in this engraving provide a glimpse into the beauty and diversity of the natural world, showcasing the delicate balance of life and the intricacies of the insect kingdom.
