EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century woodcut print titled "Senses within the brain" offers a glimpse into the intricate workings of the human mind. Created by German author Georg Reisch, this artwork is part of his renowned publication, Margarita philosophica. The profile view of a man's head showcases various parts of the brain, each meticulously labeled with their respective functions such as memory, cognition, fantasia (imagination), and sensus (sensation). What makes this piece even more intriguing are the Latin inscriptions accompanying it. The nose, eye, ear, and tongue are marked in Latin script with lines leading to different regions within the brain. Below the nose lies an enigmatic phrase written in small ink letters: "nolo me tange" meaning "touch me not". This cryptic addition adds an air of mystery to an already fascinating illustration. As we delve into history through this monochrome masterpiece from the Middle Ages, we gain insight into how our ancestors perceived human anatomy and physiology. It serves as a testament to their curiosity and quest for knowledge about themselves and their surroundings. The Senses within the Brain woodcut invites us to contemplate our own sensory experiences while appreciating both its artistic beauty and scientific significance. It reminds us that understanding ourselves is an eternal pursuit that transcends time and culture.
