Marguerite de la Sabliere, arts patron

Marguerite de la Sabliere (c.1636-1693), French arts patron. De la Sabliere was a friend and patron of artists, writers and scientists. The poet La Fontaine taught her philosophy and natural history, and her salon became a cultural centre in Paris. Members of the French Academy such as Joseph Sauveur and Giles de Roberval instructed her in mathematics, physics and astronomy. She attended the public lectures of Verney on anatomy, D Alence on physics, and Roberval on calculus. She studied at the Paris Observatory under Cassini, and is considered to be one of the first woman astronomers. Her role typifies that of the scientific lady at the beginning of the Enlightenment in France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Marguerite de la Sabliere, a remarkable figure in 17th century France. Known as an arts patron, she played a pivotal role in supporting and nurturing the talents of artists, writers, and scientists during the Enlightenment era. Her salon in Paris became a vibrant cultural center where intellectuals gathered to exchange ideas and knowledge. Marguerite's thirst for learning was insatiable. She immersed herself in various disciplines such as philosophy, natural history, mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Renowned poet La Fontaine served as her mentor in philosophy and natural history while members of the French Academy like Joseph Sauveur and Giles de Roberval instructed her in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Her dedication to education extended beyond formal instruction. Marguerite attended public lectures on anatomy by Verney, physics by D Alence, and calculus by Roberval. She even studied at the prestigious Paris Observatory under Cassini's guidance—making her one of the pioneering women astronomers of her time. Marguerite de la Sabliere epitomizes the spirit of enlightenment that swept through France during this period—a polymath who embraced both scientific pursuits and artistic endeavors with equal fervor. Her contributions to society transcended gender norms at a time when women were often excluded from intellectual circles. This stunning illustration captures not only Marguerite's historical significance but also serves as a reminder of how influential individuals can shape their societies through their passion for knowledge and support for creativity.
