Published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, London, in 1879. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the renowned literary work "Stories from Virgil" by Reverend Alfred J. Church, M. A. , beautifully illustrated by Bartolomeo Pinelli. Published in 1879, this particular image portrays a pivotal moment in the story of Dido and Aeneas. In this scene, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, hatches a cunning plan to deceive Dido. She sends her own son, who happens to be Aeneas' half-brother (and Dido's step-son), to pose as Ascanius - Aeneas' real son with his first wife Creusa. The false Ascanius skillfully manipulates Dido's emotions and kindles within her a renewed love for Aeneas. The composition of this artwork is truly mesmerizing; it effortlessly conveys the complexity of human emotions at play. The expressions on each character's face tell their own tale - confusion mixed with longing can be seen in Dido's eyes as she gazes upon the imposter child before her. As we delve into this visual masterpiece, we are reminded that even gods resort to trickery when it comes to matters of passion and destiny. This print serves as both an exquisite piece of art and a reminder that love has the power to sway hearts and alter fates.
