EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases six different species of butterflies: the Blue Admiral, Kaniska canace (1 and 2), the Rustic Butterfly, Cupha erymanthis (3 and 4), and the Common Evening Brown, Melanitis leda (5 and 6). The intricate details of these beautiful insects are expertly captured in this 19th-century artwork. The Blue Admiral, with its vibrant blue wings adorned with black borders and white spots, is a sight to behold. The Rustic Butterfly, with its orange and black wings, is easily recognizable with its distinctive white spots on the underside of its wings. The Common Evening Brown, with its large wingspans and striking brown and orange wings, is another captivating species. The ventral side of the Blue Admiral (1) and Rustic Butterfly (3) are also depicted, providing a closer look at their intricately patterned abdomens. The dorsal side of the Common Evening Brown (5) is shown, revealing its striking wing patterns. This lithograph is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the Lepidoptera order, and a reminder of the natural wonders that were being discovered and documented during the 19th century. The handcoloured technique adds an extra layer of detail and depth to the already impressive illustrations, making this a truly remarkable piece of scientific and artistic history.
