EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Percuil ferry landing in Gerrans, Cornwall, back in 1910. The scene showcases a bustling beach with eager individuals patiently waiting for the arrival of the ferry. As if on cue, the pleasure steamer Roseland gracefully enters the picture from the right, adding an element of excitement to this serene coastal setting. Intriguingly, amidst this picturesque backdrop stands an old sailing vessel that has seen better days. Stripped of its masts and rigging, it now serves a different purpose - part of its main mast has been repurposed as a derrick while other sections are used for storage. Although no longer seaworthy, this hulk remains a testament to Cornwall's rich maritime history. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Canon Henry Holroyd Mills. His keen eye captured not only the beauty of Percuil (or Porthcuel) river but also provided us with a glimpse into daily life during Edwardian times in rural Cornwall. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate both the natural splendor and human ingenuity depicted within it. This photograph transports us back over a century ago when ferries were essential lifelines connecting communities along these enchanting Cornish shores.
