AIDS viruses budding from T-cell

AIDS viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of rounded Human Immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) budding from the surface of an infected T-lymphocyte blood cell (T-cell). HIV is the causative agent of AIDS (Acquired Immune Defi- ciency Syndrome). At top are clusters of virus particles. Part of the cell is seen at lower frame with its granular cell contents. After infection, HIV instructs the cell to reproduce more viruses which bud away from the cell. By this process the T-cell of the blood immune system dies. Lower numbers of T-cells is the main reason for the destruction of a persons immune system in AIDS. Magnification: x10, 850 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate and destructive nature of AIDS viruses. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph, we witness rounded Human Immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) budding from the surface of an infected T-lymphocyte blood cell (T-cell). HIV, the notorious culprit behind Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is brought to life in this image. At the top of the frame, clusters of virus particles are prominently displayed, showcasing their ability to multiply rapidly within a host. Meanwhile, at the lower part of the frame, we catch a glimpse of the T-cell's granular cell contents - a stark reminder that these cells are under attack. Following infection by HIV, an alarming process unfolds as it instructs its host cell to reproduce more viruses. These newly formed viral particles then bud away from the T-cell's surface. Tragically, this relentless cycle ultimately leads to the demise of these vital components of our immune system. The devastating consequence? A person's immune system becomes compromised due to significantly reduced numbers of T-cells - a primary factor contributing to AIDS-related immunodeficiency. With a magnification level reaching x10,850 and presented in a 5x7cm size format by Science Photo Library, this powerful visual serves as both an educational tool and a solemn reminder about one of humanity's most formidable health challenges: AIDS.
