Coloured SEM of section through a human arteriole

Arteriole. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a small human artery known as an arteriole. This blood vessel reveals red blood cells travelling through its central lumen. Its inner wall (tunica intima) is thin and appears folded, comprising an endothelial lining and a thin elastic layer which stretches. A thicker tunica media layer (pink) makes up much of the wall of the arteriole, and is almost entirely composed of smooth muscle cells. An outer tunica adventitia layer merges with surrounding connec- tive tissue (yellow). These layers enable the arteriole to expand and contract, regulating the arterial blood pressure. Magnification: unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a human arteriole, providing an intricate view into the inner workings of our circulatory system. The image depicts a small artery known as an arteriole, with red blood cells gracefully traversing through its central lumen. The thin inner wall of the arteriole, referred to as the tunica intima, appears folded and consists of an endothelial lining along with a delicate elastic layer that stretches when necessary. A thicker layer called the tunica media dominates much of the arterial wall and is characterized by its pink hue. Composed primarily of smooth muscle cells, this layer plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure by enabling expansion and contraction. As we venture further outward from the tunica media, we encounter the outermost layer known as the tunica adventitia. This layer seamlessly merges with surrounding connective tissue represented by vibrant yellow tones. Together, these layers work harmoniously to ensure proper functioning and maintenance of arterial health. With an unknown level of magnification applied to capture this stunning detail, this photograph not only highlights scientific beauty but also serves as a reminder of our body's remarkable complexity. It offers us valuable insights into how our arteries function while emphasizing their vital role in sustaining life itself.
