Plant cell mitosis, light micrograph

Plant cell mitosis. Light micrograph of root tip cells from an onion (Allium sp.) undergoing cell division (mitosis). From top left to bottom right: the chromosomes condense and appear as long thread-like structures (prophase). They then align along the centre of the cell (metaphase). Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids that separate and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell (anaphase). Nuclear membranes then form around the two daughter nuclei as the chromosomes de-condense (telophase). The cell then divides (cytokinesis). Magnification: x1000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of plant cell mitosis, providing a glimpse into the remarkable world of cellular division. The image captures root tip cells from an onion undergoing various stages of mitosis, revealing the mesmerizing transformation that takes place within these tiny structures. From top left to bottom right, we witness the chromosomes condensing and elongating into thread-like structures during prophase. As metaphase unfolds, these chromosomes align themselves along the center of the cell with utmost precision. Anaphase follows suit as each chromosome splits into two identical sister chromatids that are then pulled towards opposite ends of the cell. The subsequent telophase witnesses nuclear membranes forming around the newly formed daughter nuclei while simultaneously de-condensing the chromosomes. Finally, cytokinesis occurs as this vibrant plant cell divides itself into two separate entities. Magnified at x1000 and adorned in stunning false colors, this light micrograph not only highlights nature's beauty but also provides valuable insights for botanical science enthusiasts and researchers alike. It unravels essential details about plant structure, replication processes, and even microscopic subjects such as microtubules and centromeres. This extraordinary photograph is a testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to capturing awe-inspiring moments in biology through their lens - offering us a deeper understanding and appreciation for life's most fundamental building blocks.
