Skulls of Tuang child and a chimpanzee
Tuang child (Australopithecus africanus) and chimpanzee skulls. The Tuang child fossil (left) was discovered in 1924 in Tuang, South Africa. The child, an example of A. africanus, is believed to have been about 3 years old at the time of its death. A. africanus was a bipedal ape living in Africa 3-2 million years ago. The skull is similar to that of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes, right), although A. africanus had more human-like teeth and a slightly larger brain capacity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the skulls of a Tuang child and a chimpanzee, offering a fascinating glimpse into our evolutionary history. On the left is the skull of the Tuang child, an Australopithecus africanus fossil discovered in 1924 in Tuang, South Africa. Believed to have been around 3 years old at the time of its death, this A. africanus specimen provides valuable insights into our bipedal ape ancestors who roamed Africa 3-2 million years ago. Comparing it to the chimpanzee skull on the right, we can observe striking similarities between these two species. However, there are notable differences as well. The Tuang child's skull exhibits more human-like teeth and slightly larger brain capacity than that of its chimpanzee counterpart. This image not only highlights the wonders of paleoanthropology but also emphasizes how closely related humans and primates are in terms of evolution. It serves as a reminder that we share common ancestry with these incredible creatures. The photograph captures this duo in all its glory – showcasing bone structures frozen in time through fossilization. It invites us to ponder upon our place within nature's grand tapestry and encourages further exploration into our origins as hominids. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring visual representation that sparks curiosity about our past and fuels scientific inquiry for future discoveries.
