Cilia in cross section

Cilia. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cross section through cilia (circles), from the lining (epithelium) of the human trachea, or windpipe. Cilia in the trachea are hair-like projections that beat rhythmically to move mucus away from the gas-exchanging parts of the lungs, up towards the throat where it can be swallowed or coughed up. They project in parallel rows, with 300 on each cell, measuring up to 10 micrometres in length. Each cilium contains a central core (axoneme), which consists of twenty microtubules arranged as a central pair, surrounded by nine peripheral doublets (as seen). Magnification: x40, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of cilia in cross section. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), it provides a colorful glimpse into the lining of the human trachea, or windpipe. Cilia, which resemble tiny circles in this image, are hair-like projections that play a crucial role in our respiratory system. These remarkable structures rhythmically beat to propel mucus away from the lungs' gas-exchanging regions towards the throat, where it can be swallowed or coughed up. Aligned neatly in parallel rows on each cell, there are an astonishing 300 cilia measuring up to 10 micrometers long. The central core of each cilium, known as axoneme, is composed of twenty microtubules arranged as a central pair and surrounded by nine peripheral doublets—a fascinating sight captured here. With a magnification level of x40,000 at 6x7cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate the complexity and delicate nature of these vital anatomical structures. Science Photo Library has once again delivered an awe-inspiring image that not only highlights the wonders within our own bodies but also serves as a reminder of their importance for our overall well-being.
