Bones of the torso, artwork
Human skeleton, computer artwork. Running down centre is the spine. The cervical (neck) spine is blue, thethoracic (upper) spine is green and the lumbar (lower) spine is orange. It is made up of vertebrae, block-like bones that protect the spinal cord and support the upper body. The ribcage is made up of twelve pairs of curved bones that attach to the thoracic (upper) spine at the back and the sternum (breastbone) at the front. The clavicle (collar bone) and scapular (shoulder blade) articulate with the humerus (upper arm bone) to form the shoulder joint. The two lower arm bones are the ulna and radius. The large triangular bone at the base of the spine is the sacrum, with the coccyx (tailbone) below it. Either side of the sacrum are the large ear-shaped hip bones, which articulate with the femurs (thigh bones)
