Cutaneous leishmaniasis, 1917

Cutaneous leishmaniasis. Lesions on the face of a man in Palestine in 1917 in a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The local name for this condition at the time was Jericho buttons, referring to an outbreak of this condition in and around the nearby ancient city of Jericho. This is the skin form of a protozoan parasite infection (of the genus Leishmania) transmitted by sandfly bites. Raised, red lesions ( buttons ) develop that can become infected with bacteria. This photograph was obtained by the American Colony Photo Department of Jerusalem

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken in 1917, showcases the devastating effects of cutaneous leishmaniasis on a man's face in Palestine. Known as "Jericho buttons" due to its prevalence around the ancient city of Jericho, this condition is caused by a parasitic infection transmitted through sandfly bites. The image reveals raised and red lesions, resembling buttons, which can become infected with bacteria. The severity of this disease is evident from the ulcerated appearance of the man's skin. His pale complexion highlights the impact it has had on his overall health. Captured by the American Colony Photo Department of Jerusalem, this historical photograph provides valuable insight into medical practices during that era. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals living in regions where such diseases were prevalent. With its focus on one individual's struggle with cutaneous leishmaniasis, this image emphasizes both the personal toll and wider implications of infectious diseases. It sheds light on an important chapter in medical history while also highlighting ongoing efforts to combat similar conditions worldwide. As part of the Library of Congress' collection from Science Photo Library, this powerful visual document offers viewers a glimpse into a time when dermatology and parasitology were still emerging fields within medicine.
