Eye retina F008 / 0718

The retina, inside the eye, contains a light-sensitive membranous layer of cells. These are specialized nerve cells: elongated rods (flower like shapes) and cone-tipped cells, that produce vision. The yellow structure at bottom represents the epithelium. The rods are very sensitive and respond to dim light. With them the eye can detect images. While the cones are less sensitive but responsible for colour vision. Rods and cones pass visual signals through the optic nerve to the brain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Eye retina F008 / 0718" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of human vision. The image showcases the delicate and light-sensitive membranous layer of cells that make up the retina, nestled deep within our eyes. The retina is an extraordinary network of specialized nerve cells, elegantly depicted here as elongated rods resembling beautiful flower shapes and cone-tipped cells. These remarkable structures play a crucial role in producing our ability to see. At the bottom of the image, we can observe a yellow structure representing the epithelium, while on either side are rods and cones responsible for different aspects of our visual experience. Rods possess exceptional sensitivity to dim light, allowing us to detect images even in low-light conditions. On the other hand, cones are less sensitive but enable us to perceive vibrant colors. As visual signals pass through these photoreceptor cells - rods and cones - they ultimately travel along the optic nerve towards our brain where they transform into meaningful visual information. This stylized illustration against a pristine white background not only highlights the complexity and beauty of this essential eye structure but also serves as a reminder of how intricately connected our senses are with human anatomy. It's truly awe-inspiring to witness such detailed artwork capturing one aspect of what makes sight possible – an incredible feat achieved by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY.
