Fungal spores, SEM

Fungal spores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fungal spores on a fruiting body of an Aspergillus sp. fungus. The name for such a fruiting body is a conidiophore. It forms under certain conditions at the end of some of the threads (hyphae) that make up the fungus. This conidiophores hypha is seen at lower right. The conidiophore itself consists of chains of numerous conidia (spores, small, round) that are dispersed on the wind to form a new fungal body. Inhalation of spores by susceptible people may cause an allergic reaction known as aspergillosis. This fungus mostly grows on decomposing organic matter. Magnification: x360 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of fungal spores. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of fungal spores residing on a fruiting body of an Aspergillus sp. fungus. Known as a conidiophore, this unique structure forms under specific conditions at the end of hyphae, or threads, that compose the fungus. At the lower right corner, we can observe the conidiophore's hypha extending outward. The conidiophore itself consists of chains of numerous small and round conidia, or spores, which are dispersed by wind to initiate new fungal growth elsewhere. However, it is important to note that inhalation of these spores by susceptible individuals may lead to an allergic reaction called aspergillosis. The Aspergillus fungus predominantly thrives on decomposing organic matter and plays a vital role in nature's recycling process. This image magnifies the subject 360 times when printed at 10cm wide, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library's collection encompassing nature, botany, biology and mycology fields among others; we gain insight into the fascinating world of fungi reproduction while highlighting potential health risks associated with exposure to certain types of mold and allergens such as Aspergillus spores.
