Leptospira sp. bacterium

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a Leptospira sp. bacterium. Leptospira is one of a group of helical bacteria called spirochaetes, which contains many serious pathogens. The parasitic species L. icterohaemorrhagiae is the main causitive agent of leptospirosis (Weils disease), but many other Leptospira species cause similar symptoms, attacking the liver (jaundice) or the meninges of the brain (meningitis). Infection occurs through contact with rodents, dogs & farm animals, so farmers, sewage workers & veterinary surgeons are particularly susceptible. Treatment is with penicillin. Magnification: x33, 000 at 6x7 cm size, x16, 500 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of a Leptospira sp. bacterium, belonging to the group of helical bacteria known as spirochaetes. These bacteria are notorious for housing numerous dangerous pathogens. Among them, the parasitic species L. icterohaemorrhagiae stands out as the primary causative agent of leptospirosis, also known as Weils disease. However, several other Leptospira species can cause similar symptoms by attacking vital organs such as the liver (resulting in jaundice) or the meninges of the brain (leading to meningitis). Infection with these harmful bacteria occurs through contact with rodents, dogs, and farm animals; hence individuals working closely with these creatures like farmers, sewage workers, and veterinary surgeons are particularly vulnerable to contracting leptospirosis. Fortunately, treatment options exist in the form of penicillin. The magnification applied to this image is truly remarkable: x33,000 at 6x7 cm size and x16,500 at 35mm size. Through this detailed visual representation provided by Science Photo Library's expertise in transmission electron microscopy and bacteriology research fields combined with their mastery over false-colour techniques; we gain an unprecedented insight into the intricate world of bacterial microorganisms that often go unnoticed by our naked eyes.
