MDCK culture cells, SEM C016 / 8028

MDCK cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cultured MDCK (Madin-Darby canine kidney) epithelial cells on filter paper (fibres). The MDCK cell line originated in 1958 when it was derived by S. H. Madin and N. B. Darby from the kidney tissue of an adult female cocker spaniel. Since that time, the cells have been widely used to investigate the processing of beta-amyloid precursor protein, as well as the sorting of its proteolytic products. Magnification: x224, when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases MDCK culture cells, providing a mesmerizing glimpse into the microscopic world of biology. The image, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals the intricate details of Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells cultured on filter paper fibers. The MDCK cell line has a fascinating origin story, dating back to 1958 when it was derived from the kidney tissue of an adult female cocker spaniel by scientists S. H. Madin and N. B. Darby. Since then, these cells have played a crucial role in various research studies focused on understanding the processing and sorting mechanisms of beta-amyloid precursor protein. At a magnification of x224, this print allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found within these biological structures. The vibrant colors used in this colored SEM further enhance our visual experience, making each individual cell stand out against the fibrous background. Stefan Diller's expert photography skills have enabled us to witness this remarkable sight up close and personal. This image serves as a reminder of how scientific advancements continue to unravel mysteries hidden within nature's smallest building blocks.
