Plant pores, SEM

Plant pores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stomata (pores) on the pistil of a bellflower (Adenophora sp.). Stomata are the site of gaseous exchange, or respiration. Carbon dioxide enters the plant for use in photosynthesis, and waste oxygen leaves the plant via the stomata. Water also evaporates from the stomata. The highest concentration of stomata is found on the leaves, but they are present all over the plant. The pistil is the female reproductive part of a flower. Magnification: x1000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of plant pores, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image focuses on the pistil of a bellflower (Adenophora sp. ), revealing an array of stomata or pores. Stomata serve as vital sites for gaseous exchange and respiration in plants. They allow carbon dioxide to enter for photosynthesis while facilitating the release of waste oxygen. Additionally, water evaporates from these tiny openings. While leaves harbor the highest concentration of stomata, they can be found throughout various parts of the plant. In this particular shot, attention is drawn to the female reproductive structure known as the pistil. Magnified at 1000 times its actual size and printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image offers a mesmerizing glimpse into nature's microscopic wonders. The false-colored rendering adds an artistic touch to highlight different features within the image. This photograph not only celebrates botanical marvels but also serves as a reminder of how plants efficiently manage their respiratory processes and reproduction through specialized structures like stomata. Captured by Science Photo Library, this stunning print invites viewers into a world where science meets artistry—a testament to both our fascination with nature's intricacies and our desire to explore them further.
