Volcanic activity on Jupiters moon Io, with the planet Jupiter visible on the horizon

Io is the innermost of the Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter. Io is on average around 400 000 km away from Jupiter, which is approximately the same distance as our moon is from Earth. Jupiter looks 37 times larger than our full moon does in the night sky.
Io faces great tidal forces from Jupiter, and the other three Galilean moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, which are tidally locked with respect to each other. At some places the tidal forces move the surface by as much as 100 meters up and down. This twists the moon inside out, but it is not because of this that the moon is the second hottest place (1 700 degrees C) in the solar system, next to the sun.
Ios surface is being constantly bombarded by electromagnetic radiation from Jupiter. This radiation rips off about 1 000 kg of sulphur and other materials from the surface each second. This material (plasma) creates a physical bond between Jupiter and Io. As Io moves through Jupiters magnetic field, it acts as a giant generator, inducing 400 000 volts and more than 3 000 000 amperes across Ios surface. Because of this bond, massive electrical discharges have been observed in Jupiters atmosphere.
More than 400 active volcanoes have been observed on Io, and the moon is known to change its physical appearance over short periods (few years). An impact by an asteroid is seen on Jupiters night side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing volcanic activity on Jupiter's moon Io, with the majestic planet itself visible on the horizon. As the innermost of Jupiter's Galilean moons, Io experiences immense tidal forces from its celestial neighbors Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These forces cause dramatic surface movements of up to 100 meters, giving Io a twisted appearance. However, it is not these tidal forces that make Io the second hottest place in our solar system after the sun; rather, it is due to constant bombardment by electromagnetic radiation emitted by Jupiter. The intense radiation strips off approximately 1,000 kg of sulphur and other materials from Io's surface every second, creating a physical bond between Jupiter and this enigmatic moon. As Io traverses through Jupiter's magnetic field, it acts as an enormous generator inducing mind-boggling electrical phenomena across its surface - over 400,000 volts and more than 3 million amperes! This extraordinary connection results in massive electrical discharges observed within Jupiters atmosphere. Io boasts more than 400 active volcanoes which continuously shape its ever-changing landscape over short periods of time. In this particular image captured by Fahad Sulehria from Stocktrek Images, an impact caused by an asteroid can be seen on Jupiters night side adding another layer of intrigue to this cosmic spectacle. The sheer beauty and dynamic nature displayed in this photograph remind us of the awe-inspiring wonders that exist beyond our own Earthly realm.
