EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite engraving, titled "Le Theatre du Monde" and created by Guillaume and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1645, offers a captivating glimpse into the ancient world and its wonders. At the heart of this intricately detailed image lies the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, this architectural marvel stood tall on the Egyptian coast, serving as a beacon for seafarers navigating the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Lighthouse, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, is depicted here as a towering structure with three distinct sections. The lowest part is a square base, the middle section is an octagonal drum, and the uppermost part is a spherical shape, believed to have been covered in reflective bronze or silver to magnify the light. The vessel in the foreground, possibly a representation of a Dutch ship or a generic depiction of a vessel from the era, offers a sense of scale and highlights the immense size of the Lighthouse. This engraving, part of the Blaeu family's atlas "Atlas Novus," showcases the intricate craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that characterized Dutch cartography during this period. The intricate depiction of the Lighthouse, with its various sections and architectural details, underscores the fascination Europeans had with the ancient world and their desire to preserve its history and wonders for future generations.
