Dividing Streptococcus sp. bacterium

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus sp.; the elongated cell at top is in the process of division (replication). Streptococci secrete a viscous material to form capsules (red) around their cell walls. The role of the capsule is uncertain, but is associated with virulence in pathogenic organisms, providing protection against the hosts immune system. Capsulated organisms resist phagocytosis (engulfing) by scavenging macrophages and are thus able to continue to multiply. Magnification x11, 400 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus sp. The image captures a momentous event in the life cycle of this bacterial species - cell division or replication. At the top, an elongated cell is seen undergoing division, highlighting the remarkable ability of these microbes to multiply and proliferate. What makes Streptococci particularly intriguing is their secretion of a viscous material that forms capsules around their cell walls, depicted here in striking red hues. Although the exact role of these capsules remains uncertain, they are known to be associated with virulence in pathogenic organisms by providing protection against the host's immune system. The presence of capsules enables capsulated organisms like these Streptococci to resist phagocytosis, which refers to engulfing by scavenging macrophages. By evading this process, they can continue multiplying within their environment undeterred. With a magnification level of x11,400 at 6x7cm size, this transmission electron micrograph offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the intricate world of bacteria and highlights their significance in various fields such as bacteriology and microbiology.
