Myelinated nerves, SEM
Myelinated nerves. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through myelinated nerve fibres and Schwann cells. Myelin (dark brown) is an insulating fatty layer that surrounds the nerve fibre (axon, black), increasing the speed at which nerve impulses travel. It is formed when Schwann cells (light brown) wrap around the fibre, depositing layers of myelin between each coil. The outermost layer consists of the Schwann cells cytoplasm and is known as the neurolemma or sheath of Schwann

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of myelinated nerves. In this false-colored scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the complex world of our nervous system. The image reveals myelin, a dark brown insulating fatty layer that envelops the nerve fibers (axon) in black, enhancing the speed at which nerve impulses travel. The process by which myelin is formed is truly remarkable. Schwann cells, depicted here in light brown, wrap themselves around the fiber and deposit layers of myelin between each coil. This results in an outermost layer known as the neurolemma or sheath of Schwann, consisting of their cytoplasm. The significance of myelination cannot be overstated; it plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy neurological function. By providing insulation to nerve fibers, this protective sheath ensures efficient transmission of signals throughout our body's central nervous system. As we delve deeper into understanding neuroscience and its impact on human biology, images like these serve as invaluable tools for researchers and medical professionals alike. They offer us insight into the inner workings of our own bodies and inspire awe at nature's intricacy. Science Photo Library continues to provide us with stunning visuals that bridge artistry and scientific discovery. Through their lens, we gain access to worlds unseen by the naked eye – reminding us just how extraordinary life can be on both macroscopic and microscopic scales.
