Home Decor from Science Photo Library
Colour SEM of Corynebacterium diphtheria
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Corynebacterium diphtheria, the Gram-positive, non-motile bacteria responsible for diphtheria. Individual bacterium are club-shaped at one end (Corynebacterium = clubbed rod). Diphtheria is caused by a potent exotoxin released from the bacterium; infection occurs through direct contact or contaminated milk. Symptoms include sore throat & fever; a grey membrane forms across throat causing breathing difficulties. The exotoxin damages heart & nervous tissues; death may result from heart failure. Treatment involves giving an antitoxin, penicillin, & complete rest. Magnification: X 3, 000 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Corynebacterium diphtheria, the notorious Gram-positive, non-motile bacteria responsible for causing diphtheria. Each individual bacterium is distinctively club-shaped at one end, hence the name Corynebacterium which means "clubbed rod". Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by this potent exotoxin released from the bacteria. Transmission occurs through direct contact or consumption of contaminated milk. The symptoms include a sore throat and fever, with a grey membrane forming across the throat leading to breathing difficulties. The exotoxin produced by these bacteria can cause severe damage to both heart and nervous tissues, potentially resulting in heart failure and even death. However, effective treatment involves administering an antitoxin along with penicillin therapy while ensuring complete rest. Captured at a magnification of X 3,000 on a 35mm size frame, this SEM image provides us with an up-close view of these harmful bacterial organisms that have plagued humanity throughout history. It serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding microbial biology and employing appropriate measures to combat such dangerous pathogens.
