Base of the brain

Base of the brain, historical anatomical artwork. The front of the brain is at top. The origin of the 12 cranial nerves is shown. These are nerves that go directly from the brain to body systems, as opposed to the spinal nerves that branch off the spinal cord. These nerves and the brainstem (lower centre) are white. The rest of the brain is yellow (cerebellum at bottom; cerebrum making up rest of visible surface). The elongated nerves at upper centre are part of the olfactory nerve (the first cranial nerve). At centre is the optic nerve (the second cranial nerve). The other nerves are at lower centre. Artwork from The Nerves of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, London, 1839)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical anatomical artwork showcases the intricate base of the brain, providing a glimpse into the complex network of nerves that connect this vital organ to various body systems. The print, dating back to 1839 and featured in "The Nerves of the Human Body" offers a fascinating visual representation of the brain's underbelly. At first glance, one is immediately drawn to the white-colored brainstem at the lower center, surrounded by yellow hues representing the cerebellum at its bottom and the rest of the visible surface known as cerebrum. This unique illustration highlights not only these major components but also emphasizes their connection with twelve cranial nerves originating directly from different regions within this central command center. The elongated nerves positioned at upper center belong to none other than olfactory nerve - aptly named as it represents our sense of smell and serves as our first cranial nerve. Meanwhile, prominently displayed at center stage is another crucial pathway: optic nerve - responsible for transmitting visual information from our eyes to our brain. With meticulous detail and precision characteristic of medical illustrations from that era, this artwork provides an invaluable resource for understanding neurology and anatomy during its time. It stands as a testament to both scientific progress and artistic expression while offering us a window into how early medical textbooks sought to educate generations about our most complex organ –the human brain.
