Fine Art Prints from Science Photo Library
Robert Koch, German bacteriologist
Robert Koch (1843-1910), German bacteriologist. Along with Louis Pasteur, Koch is considered the founder of modern medical bacteriology. His techniques for cultivating bacteria, both in liquid and solid media, and his use of stains, enabled him to study the life cycles of bacteria in laboratory conditions. As a result he was able to isolate the specific bacteria responsible for certain diseases. The high point of his career was the identification in 1882 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (TB). Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology in 1905
