Skin section, SEM

Skin section. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through human skin. A hair (red) is protruding through the surface. The top layer of the epidermis is the stratum corneum (cornified layer, light brown). It is comprised of dead, keratinised flattened skin cells, which are continuously sloughed off and replaced with new cells from below. The living layer of the epidermis (dark brown) is called the Malpighian layer. This layer contains cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin. This pigment darkens the skin when it is exposed to sunlight, producing a suntan. Magnification: x55 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of human skin. Through the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we are presented with a vividly colored image showcasing various layers and components that make up this remarkable organ. At first glance, our attention is immediately drawn to a single hair, boldly protruding through the skin's surface in vibrant red. This serves as a reminder of the constant renewal process taking place within our bodies. The topmost layer, known as the stratum corneum or cornified layer, is depicted in light brown hues. Composed of lifeless, keratinized flattened cells, it sheds continuously to give way for new cells from below. Delving deeper into the image reveals the living layer of the epidermis – an intriguing dark brown shade referred to as the Malpighian layer. Within this dynamic region reside melanocytes, specialized cells responsible for producing melanin pigment. When exposed to sunlight, melanin darkens our skin and creates that coveted suntan effect. With its false-colored presentation and magnification level indicated at x55 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this photograph provides an extraordinary opportunity to appreciate both beauty and complexity on a microscopic scale. It invites us to marvel at nature's intricacy while deepening our understanding of biology and anatomy within our own integumentary system - truly highlighting science's ability to capture wonders unseen by naked eyes.
