Sulfamethoxazole molecule

Sulfamethoxazole. Computer-generated molecular model of sulfamethoxazole (molecular formula: C10.H11.N3.O3.S), part of the sulphonamide group of antibiotics. It is composed of carbon (light blue), hydrogen (white), sulphur (yellow), nitrogen (dark blue) and oxygen (red). Sulfamethoxazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid (folate) inside the bacterial cell. Folic acid is necessary for the production of genetic material (deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA). Without DNA, the bacteria cannot reproduce and the infection is stopped (bacteriostatic effect). Sulfamethoxazoles efficiency is being affected by the increase in bacterial resistance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer-generated molecular model of the Sulfamethoxazole molecule, an essential component of the sulphonamide group of antibiotics. The intricate structure consists of carbon, hydrogen, sulphur, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms represented by light blue, white, yellow, dark blue, and red colors respectively. Sulfamethoxazole acts as a potent inhibitor in bacterial cells by impeding the synthesis of folic acid (folate), which is crucial for genetic material production (DNA). By disrupting this process, it effectively halts bacterial reproduction and curtails infections with its bacteriostatic effect. However, despite its remarkable efficiency in combating bacteria-induced ailments over the years since its discovery in pharmacology and medicine fields; recent challenges have emerged due to an alarming rise in bacterial resistance. This unfortunate development has rendered Sulfamethoxazole less effective against certain strains that have evolved mechanisms to counteract its antibacterial properties. Nevertheless, this visually stunning image serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle between science and evolving microbial threats. It highlights both the structural beauty and complexity inherent within these microscopic agents while underscoring the need for continued research into alternative treatments to overcome antibiotic resistance. Captured by Science Photo Library's expert lens through computer artwork techniques rooted in chemistry and microbiology disciplines; this print offers a glimpse into our ongoing quest to combat infectious diseases on a molecular level.
