Trypanosomes in blood smear, SEM C016 / 5783

Parasitic protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of trypanosome protozoa (Trypanosoma sp.) in a blood smear. Trypanosomes undergo part of their development in the blood of a vertebrate host. Two species, which are transmitted through the bites of tsetse flies, cause sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis). Another species, which is transmitted by reduviid insects, causes Chagas disease. Both diseases may be fatal if not treated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of trypanosomes, parasitic protozoa that reside in the blood of vertebrate hosts. The image, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals the vibrant colors and unique structure of these pathogenic organisms. Trypanosomes play a significant role in causing two devastating diseases: sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis) and Chagas disease. Transmitted through tsetse flies and reduviid insects respectively, these illnesses can be fatal if left untreated. The false-colored SEM highlights the distinct features of trypanosomes as they undergo development within their host's bloodstream. These eukaryotic microorganisms belong to the kinetoplastida class within the larger group known as euglenozoa. In this mesmerizing image, red blood cells provide a backdrop for the trypanosomes' presence, emphasizing their impact on human health. The detailed view allows medical professionals to diagnose these infections accurately. Displayed by Natural History Museum London/Science Photo Library, this photograph serves as both an educational tool and a testament to scientific progress in understanding parasites and combating infectious diseases. It reminds us of the ongoing efforts to study and combat such pathogens while highlighting nature's complexity at its microscopic level.
