Bone resorption

Bone resorption. Computer artwork of an osteoclast (green, bone-removing cell) destroying a piece of bone. This process, known as bone resorption, is a normal part of the continual rebuilding of a human skeleton. It can also get out of control and lead to excessive bone loss, such as in osteoporosis. The osteoclast has a ruffled edge (bottom) that is attached to the bone and which secretes acids and enzymes to dissolve the bone mineral and remove the collagen (connective tissue). This osteoclast is eating through a bone trabecula, part of the honeycombed structure of cancellous (spongy) bone. The other cells (osteoblasts) build bone tissue

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of bone resorption, depicted through computer artwork. At the center of attention is an osteoclast, a remarkable green cell responsible for removing and destroying pieces of bone. As part of the continual rebuilding of our human skeleton, bone resorption plays a vital role in maintaining its structure. However, this natural process can sometimes spiral out of control, leading to excessive bone loss as seen in conditions like osteoporosis. The osteoclast featured here exhibits a distinctive ruffled edge at its bottom that attaches firmly to the bone surface. Through this attachment point, it secretes acids and enzymes that dissolve the mineral content within the bone while simultaneously eliminating collagen connective tissue. In this particular illustration, we witness the osteoclast diligently devouring a trabecula—a component of cancellous or spongy bone—within its honeycombed structure. It's fascinating to observe how other cells called osteoblasts work concurrently by building new bone tissue. This visually striking image not only highlights the biological intricacies behind skeletal health but also serves as a reminder that balance is crucial in maintaining optimal physiological function. Whether exploring anatomy or delving into physiology studies, Science Photo Library consistently delivers exceptional visuals like this one to enhance scientific understanding and appreciation for our incredible internal systems.
