Bordetella pertussis bacterium
False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a thin section of the whooping cough bacteria, Bordetella pertussis. The whooping cough bacteria parasitise only humans. They cause a respiratory tract infection characterised by fits of coughing that end in loud inspiratory whoops. The infection is usually contracted in childhood and is potentially fatal in infancy. Adults are sometimes affected. The infection damages the epithelium lining the trachea and bronchi, impairing the beat of the cilia that keep the airways clean. Antibiotics are of very limited effect in treatment. Magnification: X 8800 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Bordetella pertussis bacterium, responsible for causing whooping cough in humans. The false color transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals a thin section of these bacteria, highlighting their intricate structure and unique characteristics. The whooping cough bacteria are highly specialized parasites that exclusively target humans. Their presence leads to a respiratory tract infection characterized by severe fits of coughing, often ending with distinctive loud inspiratory whoops. While typically contracted during childhood, this infection can be potentially fatal for infants and occasionally affects adults as well. One of the most concerning aspects of this infection is its ability to damage the epithelium lining the trachea and bronchi, impairing the function of cilia responsible for keeping our airways clean. This disruption further exacerbates respiratory distress. Despite advancements in medicine, treating whooping cough remains challenging as antibiotics have limited effectiveness against it. Therefore, understanding the biology and behavior of these microbes becomes crucial in developing effective prevention strategies. With an impressive magnification level of X 8800 at 35mm size, this photograph provides scientists and researchers with valuable insights into the morphology and structure of Bordetella pertussis. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly tiny organisms can have significant impacts on human health and highlights the importance of ongoing research in microbiology to combat infectious diseases effectively.
