Photo Mug : Bronchioles
Home Decor from Science Photo Library
Bronchioles
Bronchiole network, composite image. The trachea (windpipe, not seen) branches into two bronchi, which enter the pair of lungs. Within the lungs the bronchi divide into an internal network of smaller and finer bronchioles (seen here). These bronchiole tubes end in tiny balloon-like air sacs called alveoli. Exchange of gases occurs in the alveoli; inhaled oxygen enters the blood and carbon-dioxide is breathed out. For this respiration process, the lungs are inflated and contracted by movement of the diaphragm (not seen) and ribs (thick white lines)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of bronchioles within the human respiratory system. The image captures the complexity of this vital anatomical structure, starting with the trachea branching into two bronchi that enter each lung. Within the lungs, these bronchi further divide into a web-like arrangement of smaller and finer bronchioles. The focus of this composite image lies on these delicate bronchiole tubes, which eventually culminate in tiny balloon-like air sacs known as alveoli. It is within these alveoli that the exchange of gases takes place during respiration. Inhaled oxygen enters the bloodstream while carbon dioxide is expelled through exhalation. To facilitate this crucial process, we rely on the movement of our diaphragm and ribs to inflate and contract our lungs. Although not visible in this photograph, it is worth noting that these movements play an essential role in maintaining healthy breathing patterns. Science Photo Library has expertly captured both the beauty and functionality of our respiratory system through this stunning visual representation. This print serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are and highlights just one aspect of their remarkable complexity.
