f / Colour TEM of Brucella abortus bacteria
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacteria Brucella abortus, the species causing brucellosis in cattle & humans. Individual bacterium are Gram-negative, spherical or rod-shaped. B. abortus is unable to establish itself in immature animals, but invades the udder & uterus in cows & the testis in bulls. Symptoms include sickness, loss of appetite & general weakness, leading to chronic fever & swelling of lymph nodes. Transmission to man occurs through direct contact with an infected animal (goats, pigs & sheep are also affected) or through drinking contaminated milk. Magnification: X 10, 000 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the false-color transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Brucella abortus bacteria, the culprit behind brucellosis in both cattle and humans. These individual bacterium are characterized as Gram-negative, either spherical or rod-shaped. While B. abortus fails to establish itself in immature animals, it invades the udder and uterus in cows and the testis in bulls. The symptoms of this infection include sickness, loss of appetite, general weakness, chronic fever, and swelling of lymph nodes. Humans can contract brucellosis through direct contact with infected animals such as goats, pigs, sheep or by consuming contaminated milk. At a magnification level of X 10,000 at 35mm size captured through TEM technology; this image allows us to delve into the intricate world of bacterial organisms. It sheds light on their microscopic structure while emphasizing their impact on livestock health and human well-being. Science Photo Library presents this visually stunning print for those fascinated by microbiology and bacteriology alike. The photograph serves as a reminder that even unseen entities like microbes play significant roles within our ecosystems—both beneficially and detrimentally—and deserve our attention for further research and understanding.
