Avian flu, conceptual art

Avian flu. Conceptual computer artwork depicting a man in a biohazard uniform walking in front of a giant egg. Avian flu is a viral disease of poultry. The H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus first appeared in humans in South-East-Asia in 1997. Between 2003 and 2005 it killed over 60 people. In 2006 there have been a series of confirmed cases in Turkey. It is contracted by close contact with infected birds, although it cannot be contracted by eating meat or eggs. Also, as yet, H5N1 cannot be transferred between humans through the air as human flu viruses can. There are fears that the virus may mutate into a human transmissible form, which could lead to millions of deaths worldwide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This thought-provoking conceptual artwork titled "Avian flu" captures the essence of the deadly viral disease that has plagued poultry and humans alike. The image portrays a man clad in a biohazard suit, symbolizing the grave danger posed by this infectious condition. Walking in front of a colossal egg, he represents humanity's vulnerability to the looming threat. Avian flu, caused by the H5N1 strain of influenza virus, emerged in South-East Asia back in 1997. With over 60 fatalities between 2003 and 2005, it became evident that this disease was not to be taken lightly. In Turkey alone, confirmed cases began surfacing in 2006. Contracted through close contact with infected birds rather than consumption of meat or eggs, avian flu remains primarily an animal-to-human transmission. Unlike human flu viruses that spread easily through air droplets among people, H5N1 does not possess this capability - at least for now. However, concerns persist regarding its potential mutation into a form transmissible between humans. Such an event could trigger a global pandemic resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. This powerful illustration serves as a reminder of our fragile existence amidst nature's unpredictability and highlights the importance of scientific research and medical advancements to combat such epidemics effectively. It also raises questions about genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), often associated with fears surrounding food safety. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented photographers, this artwork encapsulates both the fear overshadowing society due to avian flu and our relentless pursuit for solutions within the realms of microbiology and virology.
