Gem anemone, light micrograph
Gem anemone. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the body of a gem anemone (Bunodactis verrucosa). This section has passed through the pharynx (stomodaeum) region, showing the outer and inner epidermal walls, which are joined by septae (mesenteries, lines radiating inwards) which divide the anemones body into compartments. Attached to the mesenteries are longitudinal bands of muscle (feathery areas). These retractor muscles contract to shorten the body and invert the tentacles (polyps) forcing water in and out of the body cavities. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of a gem anemone, revealing its inner workings through a light micrograph. The image showcases a transverse section that has passed through the pharynx region, displaying the outer and inner epidermal walls joined by septae or mesenteries. These mesenteries form lines radiating inwards, effectively dividing the body of the gem anemone into compartments. One can also observe longitudinal bands of muscle attached to these mesenteries, resembling feathery areas. These retractor muscles play a vital role in contracting and shortening the body of the anemone while also causing it to invert its tentacles or polyps. This action forces water to flow in and out of the body cavities. The circular shape of this marine creature is highlighted within this image, showcasing its unique anatomy and biological structure. Through histological examination using a light microscope, scientists have been able to study various aspects such as cross sections, cutouts, and different components like the pharynx region. This mesmerizing photograph not only provides insight into gem anemones but also serves as a reminder of nature's incredible diversity found beneath our oceans' surfaces. It represents just one small glimpse into the fascinating world of invertebrates and their complex ecosystems.
