Goblet cell

Goblet cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a goblet cell in the lining of the small intestine, part of the digestive tract. Most of its mucus (brown) has been released. A goblet cell secretes the mucus to protect the lining of the intestine. The brush- like surface of the small intestine consists of microvilli (yellow) which increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients such as lipids, proteins and fat-soluble vitamins. The microvilli have a rapid turnover of 3-4 days. Magnification: x9000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of the human digestive system. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph, we are presented with a section through a goblet cell found in the lining of the small intestine. The goblet cell, responsible for secreting mucus, is depicted here after most of its protective substance has been released. The small intestine's surface is adorned with brush-like structures known as microvilli, which can be seen in vibrant yellow. These tiny projections serve to increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption, playing a crucial role in our body's digestion process. Astonishingly, these microvilli have a rapid turnover rate and are renewed every 3-4 days. With a magnification level of x9000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this image truly allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty hidden within our own bodies. It serves as a reminder that even on such microscopic scales, there exists an entire world bustling with activity and purpose. As we delve into this mesmerizing visual representation captured by Science Photo Library's skilled photographers and scientists alike, we gain insight into the physiological wonders occurring within us each day. This stunning print not only highlights key biological components but also invites contemplation about our own existence and interconnectedness with nature itself.
