Lavender leaf oil gland, SEM

Lavender leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an oil gland on the surface of a French lavender (Lavandula dentata) leaf. The gland is a secretory trichome (hair-like structure), which produces and stores the oil that gives lavender its distinctive fragrance. When the leaf is touched or damaged, the gland ruptures, releasing the oil and therefore the fragrance. A number of stomata (pores, oval) can also be seen in the background. Magnification: x630 when printed 10 centimetres wide
