Tongue anatomy. Artwork of a human mouth and the anatomy of the tongue. A sectioned tongue (upper right) shows the arrangement of muscle fibres. A square cut-out shows the lingual septum (white). There are eight tongue muscles in total. Towards the rear of the tongue in both artworks are the circumvallate papillae and the lingual tonsils. The main artwork shows the teeth, the tissue of the soft palate, the palatine tonsils, the palatine uvula, and the sublingual salivary glands (pink). Four nerve branches are also shown: vagus (blue), glossopharyngeal (pink), mandibular (green), and lingual (orange)
