Skin bacterium enclosed in a capsule

Bacterial capsule. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) through an unidentified skin bacterium encased in a capsule (black). Inside the cell wall at the centre of the bacteriums grainy cytoplasm is a mesosome, an artificial structure (artefact) caused by the TEM fixation. The thick capsule or slime layer (glycocalyx) is a slimy or gummy material secreted by many bacteria onto their surfaces. It can help the bacterial cell to attach onto host cells it is infecting. It may also serve to protect the bacterium from immune cells such as phagocytes. Magnification: x125, 000 at 8x10 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a skin bacterium enclosed in a capsule, providing us with an intriguing glimpse into the microscopic world of bacteria. Captured using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), this image reveals the intricate details of an unidentified skin bacterium encased within its protective capsule. At the center of the grainy cytoplasm lies a mesosome, an artificial structure caused by TEM fixation. Surrounding the bacterium is a thick capsule or slime layer known as glycocalyx, which serves multiple purposes for these microorganisms. Not only does it aid in attaching to host cells during infection but it also acts as a shield against immune cells like phagocytes. The magnification level of 125,000x at an impressive 8x10 inch size allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty hidden within this tiny organism. This photograph not only highlights the fascinating world of microbiology but also emphasizes the importance of understanding bacterial behavior and their interactions with human hosts. With its scientific significance and aesthetic appeal, this print is perfect for anyone interested in bacteriology, microorganisms, or simply appreciating nature's wonders on a microscopic scale.
